Shanghai Rummy
There are many variations (Liverpool and May I? are two) to this type of  "contract "rummy.  This version was brought into the family by my late Aunt Mary so it's the way I was taught how to play.  And as far as I'm concerned it's the only way to play, and if you think it's wrong then  that's just TFB.!

Basic info:

The game is for 3 to 5 players. The game is played with two standard decks including four jokers (108 cards). For more than 5 players another deck (complete with jokers) is added.

The game revolves around building Sets (three of a kind) and/or Runs (four in a sequence) for the particular hand being played.  Runs must always be the same suit.

• 12 cards are dealt to each player and there are nine hands (or rounds)

  1. One Set
  2. One Run
  3. Two Sets
  4. One Set & Two Runs
  5. Two Runs
  6. Three Sets
  7. One Run, Two Sets
  8. Two Runs, One Set
  9. Three Runs

The remaining cards are placed face down with one card flipped up as the start of the up card or discard pile.

Play goes clockwise, with the person to the left of the dealer going first.  On their turn the player must pick a card from the deck or the up card (discard), make any plays, and then discard.  Once a person has the required combination of cards to lay down in the hand being played they can do so, but only during their turn.

• Once a player has put their cards on the table they can also play on any other cards on the table.  A wild card can be replaced with a natural card.  This wild card can then be replayed as the player sees fit.

In each hand play continues until a player goes out by playing all of their cards. A discard is not required to go out.

When a player goes out the remaining players must must add up their unplayed cards.  Score is kept and the player with the lowest points wins:  3 through 9 = face value of the card, 10-K = 10 points, Aces are 15 points and wild cards are 20 points.

• Jokers and 2's are wild and can be played anywhere, however, you must have at least two natural (non-wild) cards to play a set or run.  Natural cards in mixed with wilds need not be in order: 5,W,W,8 or J,W,K,W are both valid (where W=wild card)

• Aces are always high in runs (Aces can only be played at the end of a run, that would be after a king as in J,K,Q,A)

Runs and Sets can be split if needed:

Six 5's can be split in to two sets of 5's.
Likewise 5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q can be split into 5,6,7,8 and 9,10,J,Q for two runs.

Buying a card:

A player can "buy" the up card if it is not their turn, but they must also take a penalty card from the top of the deck.

The up card that is purchased must be done before the current player picks up a card. That is to say a card cannot be bought if the current player draws a card either from the deck or the discard pile!

If more than one player wants buy that card the player who's is next in line to play gets the card.  (i.e. If play is flowing from player A to B to C to D and player D wants the up card on player A's turn, he can only buy the card if player B and C do not wish to buy the card.)

A player can only buy three times during the round.  An easy way to keep track is that a player should never have more than 18 cards in their hand.
